The Tabaccaia history

The Hotel Residence Toscana Verde is a beautiful structure wise reorganized from an ancient tobacco factory for the production of tuscan cigars. The wise reorganization of the complex, has ketp its charm and historical value undamaged.

The Tabaccaia is born at the beginning of XX the century, when it develops in the municipality of Laterina the cultivation and the manipulation of the leaf of the tobacco. This activity was widespread in town and ended in the late seventies, proved by the hight number of dry kiln lieing around. The Tabaccaia of the farm of Monsoglio it still today introduces the recurrent structural typology of these buildings but with a greater longitudinal extension, adapting itself imposingly to the atmosphere encircles that it without but hindering of the fascination.

The idea to transform a tobacco dry building into a Residence Hotel originates from the intention to maintain the historical building fabric, which still today gives witness of the economical boom of Laterina during the first half of the 20 th century.

Favoured by the advantageous climatic conditions and the wide, fertile and flat acreages the tobacco cultivation established at Laterina and adjacent Tuscan areas from 1900 on. The cultivation of tobacco lasted until the seventies, a period when most of the tobacco manors had to cease their activities for economical reasons.

The consequences of this commercial crises led to the closing of a large number of tobacco dry farms in the community area of Laterina , which is still today apparent by the large number of abandoned farms in the area.
